Before You Start (2 of 7)
How do I assess an object?
Understanding the object that you are going to handle will reduce the risk of damaging the object or yourself.
Hazards
Check records and labels for any hazardous materials contained on or within the object, such as:
- Explosives
- Arsenic and toxic metals
- Radiation / ionising materials
- Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs)
- Asbestos
- Moulds and biohazards
- Nitrate film
- Lead
- Mercury
- Plastic
If you suspect that any of these are present then seek advice before handling, as a risk assessment will be required. Do not assume that an object is safe just because it is not labelled as hazardous.
