Handling Object Types (3 of 8)
How do I handle paintings?
Paintings are found in two types, framed and unframed. When framed, the frames may have mouldings around their edges, and may or may not contain glass.
General guidelines
- Use more than one person for handling all but the smallest paintings.
- Never touch the painted side or back of the canvas.
- Check for loose or missing stretcher keys; these should be replaced or corrected by an expert before attempting to move the painting.
- Ensure that mitre joints are secure; if they are loose contact a conservator for advice.
- Avoid shocks and vibration, and aim for smooth movements. If the canvas is loose it can flap when moved, which may result in loss of paint flakes.
- DO NOT use the top of the frame as a handle with which to lift it.
- Wear nitrile gloves, as bare hands can damage gilding.
- Place padded blocks on the floor to support the frame, avoiding any moulded decoration.
- Use a painting trolley if one is available, as these are designed especially for this task.
