Handling Object Types (4 of 8)

How do I handle paintings? (continued)

Small paintings:
Carry small paintings upright by the bottom edge and the side.
Large paintings:
Large paintings often have blocks fitted at the back of the frames for ease of handling; use these if they are available. For paintings without blocks, two or more people should carry the painting upright by the bottom edge and the sides.
Paintings with mouldings:
Avoid holding the sides or bottoms of the frames where there are delicate or damaged mouldings. These mouldings are usually found on the corners but can sometimes be found in the middle of the sides or bottom.
Paintings with loose paint:
Small paintings with loose or flaking paint should be carried flat so none of the paint is lost. They should also be stored flat until a conservator can secure the paint.
